Sizing and Garment Care
How do I launder my bamboo clothing?
We recommend washing your items in cold water and line drying. You may tumble dry low, but we don't recommend it. For a few reasons. First, our garments that are not labeled as garment washed or pre-washed will shrink. Second, drying bamboo clothing that is mixed with other cotton clothing will take longer to dry. Bamboo garments are moisture absorbent, and will draw the moisture from the other clothes. You will notice that your one bamboo shirt will be wet while everything else is dry. A load containing all bamboo clothes will not have this problem. Third, line drying is gentler on the garment and lastly, line drying doesn't use energy!
How do I know what size to order?
We have included a sizing chart on each item's order page to help you with sizing. It is very important that you know your measurements to compare. Sometimes we have included a garement's measurements, to help you compare with a similar item already in your closet. Keep in mind, OUR TARGET CUSTOMER WEARS THEIR CLOTHES A LITTLE TIGHTER THAN THE AVERAGE MIDDLE-AGED ADULT. Since our styles tend to be more on the slimming side, if in doubt, buy a size up, never down. This will also eliminate any confusion about bamboo shrinkage as well. If you still have additional questions, you may always contact us.
I went by your size chart, but the garment I ordered is too small for me. Why?
Please refer to the above question!
Bamboo and Fabric Production
What kind of bamboo is used for your bamboo clothing and where does it come from?
The species we use is phyllostachys heterocycla pubescens, commonly known as Moso bamboo. Moso bamboo is prevalent throughout China and is the largest of the temperate zone bamboo species. Moso is the most economically important bamboo species in China. It is most commonly used for construction purposes and edible bamboo shoots.
How renewable of a resource is bamboo? How sustainable of a resource is bamboo?
Bamboo is known to be the naturally fastest growing plant on earth, making it highly renewable. In fact, bamboo grows to its maximum height in approximately 3 months and is known to grow several feet in a matter of only a few days. Bamboo's growth characteristics enable it to spread rapidly and across large areas. Because of its growth characteristics and ability to spread, bamboo is known to improve soil quality in degraded and eroded areas of land.
What about the use of pesticides and fertilizers, does bamboo need synthetic enrichment?
Bamboo's natural growth habits allow it to reproduce in abundance without the use of fertilizers and without the need for pesticides.
How is bamboo fiber made?
The process to make bamboo rayon and yarn is the same process used to make rayon using other plants. Stalks of bamboo are essentially crushed and pulped to separate the natural fibers. The fibers are then mixed with the lowest impacted chemicals to convert the plant fiber into textile quality fiber.
Does that mean bamboo production involves chemicals?
Unfortunately, yes. As with many textiles, the process to convert raw bamboo into commercial fiber involves the use of caustic soda. However, we stay committed to dyeing our t-shirts with an organic, non-toxic dye which conforms to international standard.
Is bamboo fabric considered organic?
No. Although bamboo clothing is considered as being derived from natural fibers, it is not Organic for the same reason mentioned in the previous question. That being said, most of our bamboo clothing is blended with a certain amount of Organic Cotton.
